I have a new idea that I'd like you to "kick around." With the amazing
success of Twitter, I was wondering if you could create a module that
might allow administrators to build twitter-like pages for their users.
I'm not sure if this would be a template, like the blog, or a separate
item like the message board.
The idea would be that each user would have a small space (180-220 charcters)
where he/she could write something. Other users within the site could then
subscribe to any user's "tweet." For obvious copyright reasons, you would have
to stay away from the words Twitter and tweets.
So, let's say I have 125 users (students). Each has a blurb page/module built
into his/her private user page. When users are logged in, they can click on
their "blurb" page/link and type their short content -- this would be a marvelous
selling tool to educators, as standards-based assessment calls for this type of
short answer response writing. So, this new piece would lend itself perfectly
to practicing for achievement tests.
I like the idea, even if it couldn't be set up as a subscription within the site.
If it only looked like a list of quick blurbs, it would still be very nice. I currently
have my students completing this type of writing on pages they've created, but
as you might imagine the organization is not very neat. The often run their
blurbs together. If I had all of their short responses in one neatly-organized
page -- a "blurbs" page -- this would be very helpful.

Mark,
Microblogging is defintely an area EditMe will be venturing into at some point. This will likely be introduced as a Module that can be installed into a site. Thanks for your thoughtful input!

Not sure if you've seen DotSpots, Matt. This is another variation of the Twitter-lilke module I spoke of before. I like this one a little better.
Check it out at: http://dotspots.com/#dots/
