Custom Domains
The Standard and better plans can be configured to respond to your own domain name (as in yourdomain.com) instead of YourSite.editme.com.
EditMe does not currently provide domain hosting, so you must "point" your domain to our servers. This is typically done by logging into the web site where you purchased your domain and changing the DNS for the domain you want to use for your EditMe site. Most domain registrars provide DNS management tools, but they're all a little different, making it hard to provide a single set of instructions.
Here's an example of the steps you might take to set this up:
- Buy a domain name. For businesses, EditMe recommends Network Solutions or Register.com. They are both trusted and respected domain name registrars. For personal users, try GoDaddy, whose prices are hard to beat. All of these provide free DNS hosting with your domain. The company you bought your domain from is called the "registrar".
- Manage your DNS. Log into your registrar's web site and find the domain management section. Look for DNS tools. (See help links for various registrars below)
- Point your domain to EditMe. Create an alias, or CNAME, to point www.YourDomain.com to YourAccount.EditMe.com.
Examples:
YOURDOMAIN.com is another name for YOURSITE.editme.com
SUBDOMAIN.YOURDOMAIN.info is another name for YOURSITE.editme.com
EditMe strongly discourages pointing your domain directly at your EditMe site's IP address. Your site's IP address can change, so if your domain points to an IP address it would stop working when it changes.
Do NOT use a Web Forward with "Masking" or "Cloaking" to point to your EditMe site. A "security feature" in Internet Explorer 6.0 will block the session cookie used to authenticate users and nobody will be able to log into your site. - Open a ticket in the Private Support Forum. We need to know which domains you want your site to respond to. Please provide these instructions (e.g. "Please make myaccount.editme.com respond to www.mydomain.com.") and allow up to 24 hours for processing.

Using SSL with Custom Domains
EditMe's standard SSL/HTTPS security works only with *.editme.com domains. This is a security feature of SSL - the certificate that provides encryption is bound to the domain used to access the site and to the IP address of the server its on. This means that using SSL with a custom (non editme.com) domain will result in warnings. While you can ignore these warnings and know that the data is still securely encrypted, those who may not trust the site will likely be alarmed at these warnings.
To use SSL/HTTPS with your custom domain (www.yourdomain.com) your site must be on the Corporate plan and an SSL certificate must be purchased for your domain. The fee for the certificate is $150/year. If you would like to use SSL for your custom domain, make sure you've upgraded your site to the Corporate plan and then open a ticket at the Private Support Forum specifying the domain you wish to use with SSL.
Note that a custom domain certificate is limited to just one domain. If you wish your site to provide SSL for multiple domains (e.g. yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com), multiple certificates can be purchased for $150/year each. Also note that a custom SSL certificate for your custom domain will cause your site to give warnings if SSL is used with the editme.com domain.
